Do you think you know Hué? – I don’t. I knew so little about this land I call my second home.
As a new intern for Beebee Travel, I was lucky to join their team during the event, Hue Half Marathon 2018. Beebee Travel is one of the sponsors of this event with a large team from volunteers to managers. I am very honored to be involved as a trainee who has some fantastic hands-on experience, which is recorded below as a small journal of mine: “Two Days of Joy in Hue“.
WHAT IS HUE HALF MARATHON AND WHY BEEBEE TRAVEL SPONSORED THE EVENT?
Hue Half Marathon 2018 – an international sport event held in Hue is to encourage healthy habit and promote Hue city as an ideal city of sport and green living. The event officially took place on September 2nd. There were 1600 athletes from Hue and all over the country come together which shook the city of Hue.
The team at Beebee Travel worked crazily hard two weeks before Hue Half Marathon. Their mission is to bring Hue closer to everyone. Thus, they invited the athletes as well as Hue locals to participate in several tours around Hue as a side activity. They received great attention from the crowd. I was surprised to find myself learning a lot of their team work and mission.
They even opened opportunity for many Hue residents to discover places they never heard of, such as the old town Chi Lang – Gia Hoi. It’s one of the old town treasures, similar to Hoi An ancient town, which is located in Hue. Sadly, we are losing such ancient town due to rapid urbanization in Vietnam. You will see some pictures of our guests visiting some rarely-seen places in Hue below.
DAY ONE OF JOY IN HUE
There were three tours they specifically designed for Hue lovers during the event: The Hue Walk of Revolution, Perfume River Cruise and Cyclo the Ancient Town Chi Lang – Gia Hoi. Each of the tours, participants will learn about one period of Hue history. We started to gather at the Ngo Mon square in the early morning of 1st September. We greeted the athletes and invited them to join tours.
This is our team that morning:
In the afternoon, I was assigned to participate in their unique Hue tour: The Hue Walk of Revolution.
HUE WALK OF REVOLUTION: SPECIAL HUE WALKING TOUR ABOUT VIETNAM REVOLUTIONS
The name say it all: you really may recognize this tour’s own characteristic. Our journey began at 3PM passing unnoticeable monuments in Hue: the Anti – tax monument, Thanh Tu Dao Memorial, Dong Ba Market, Hue Citadel. We ended our tour at the Hue History Museum and Hue Museum of Royal Antiquities.
This to me is a very meaningful tour as a new comer to Hue. I know about origins and the characteristics of these relics but most importantly how the stories behind each monuments played role in Vietnam history. We explored from the 700-year history of Hue to the Indochina war and American War that raged this ancient city.
It was a good chance for me to admire the antiquities of the Nguyen Dynasty and the unique cononial works of the past as well. Finally, we decided to spend some time to enjoy Hue specialties at Dong Ba Market : Banh xeo, Banh beo, Banh nam and some local food in Hue.
Day one in Hue of mine ended with a huge appreciation for Hue ancient city. I never knew so much history of Vietnam in a day.
You can see some other pictures of our guests learning about Hue on the same day below:
DAY TWO OF EXCITEMENT IN HUE
As mentioned above, International Hue half Marathon 2018 was held in the morning (September 2nd) in Ngo Mon Square from 5’30 AM to 7’30 AM. This event attracted about 1,600 international athletes, from many provinces and cities in the country, agencies, units and schools of different ages. Many families including parents and children participated in this event. Athletes can be 10 years old to people who are over 50 years old.
This is a point what I feel very impressed and proud. The athletes compete at 5 km, 10 km, 21.1 km with the runway designed along most scenic sites in Hue.
After the opening ceremony, the athletes quickly stood up to their races and they were ready to “fight”. As you can see, the excitement of Hue Half Marathon 2018 is not only reflected in the sweats and smiles of the athletes but also in the cheering of the fans. All the runners finished the line after two hours of running. Everything made a memorable race.
Along with this activity, Beebee Travel still does not forget their task. Three tours of our company are still carried out.
Day two in Hue of mine ended with cheering noise in my ears still when I went to bed.
WHAT OUR ” TOURISTS IN THEIR OWN CITY” THINK OF TOUR WITH HUE?
I managed to record their experience after Tour with Hue.
Andrea from Spain told her feedback of the Perfume River Tour:
Mr Duc Anh expressed his feeling about the Perfume River Tour :
WHAT I LEARN FROM TWO DAYS OF JOY IN HUE?
Team work, love for your own country, live a life with purpose are greatest lessons I gained after the “Two days of Joy in Hue“. To me, those were days worth remembering during my youth. I want to end this blog with a saying:
There are many ways to show love for your country, to be proud is the first step.
